The Game
“ …It’s like life. You never have enough information. You never have enough time. The kit of materials may be what you have in the warehouse. There are always people doing competing things and you must have a strategy. We’ve created a microcosm of the real engineering experience.”

2010 Game - Breakaway
Breakaway is a game played on the 27' x 54' field. Two alliances, one red and one blue, composed of three FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams each, compete to attain a higher score than your opponent by shooting soccer balls into a goal, climbing on the alliance tower or platform, or by lifting an alliance robot off the playing surface. The field is divided into three sections-- far zone, midfield, and near zone-- by bumps 13 1/2 inches high and 12 inches wide, which the robota muat navigate over. The first 15 seconds are comprised of the autonomous period, followed by a 2 minute teleoperated period. During this time, robots must shoot soccer balls into their opponents goal, worth one point each. Once the ball has been counted, the human player must use a "trident" to pick up the soccer ball, place it onto the ball return, and return it to play, within a set amount of time-- approximately 11 seconds. In the last 20 seconds of the game, robots will attempt to climb onto the alliance tower platform, or hang directly off the alliance tower, worth 2 points for each hanging robot. Another option is for a robot to hang off of a fellow alliance robot, worth 3 points.
